Sidelines

Keep me on the sidelines
I burn oil with a night-light
So they can burn rubber in the day time
I sharpen blades so they wield knives
With no complaints 'bout my pay size
Humility, no cheap life,
Don’t ask much, just peace o’ mind
And for that, I’ll bin sighs,
My ambitions, I’ll sideline

It’s comfy, being sidelined
No tensions, no side eyes
No questions, no spotlights
Ikigai, no tired life
I like it, it’s a quiet life
Respect’s scarce, and hurt jibes,
But I keep shut, I tell myself,
Don’t jeopardise this paradise

Cause I can’t take the attention, can’t take the applause,
Can’t take the abuse or the rumours or qualms
If I could I’d be so much more - but I’m not
Foolish is a slime that dreams to be the demon lord

The hero calls out
An open spot at the frontline
My dreams push me on
Raise my hand, take the spotlight,
I freeze in my tracks,
My voice chokes, my mouth dries
So I swallow my desire
And stay on the sidelines

Surprise surprise, it’s a poem about confidence instead. Who could have guessed?
